Abstract

One of the many causes for streaks in seamless hosiery is the action exerted by the latch on the loop during the downward and upward movements of a needle. This article derives theoretical equations representing the forces and moments produced on the latch by the actions of thread and rivets.<BR> Assume x, y and z to be a system of rectangular coordinate axes, with the center of the gravity of the latch as an origin.<BR> Assume axis z to run along its neutral axis; axis y to run perpendicularly to the plane defined by the latch and the stem of the needle.<BR> Then the resulting forces acting on latches Fx, Fy and Fz; the resulting moments Nx5, Ny and Nz ; and principal inertia moments A, B and C to axes x, y and z are expressible by the following equations:<BR>Fx=ml θ -m (S+l sin θ) cos θω20<BR> Fy=2 m l ω0 cos θ·θ<BR> F=-m l θ2-m (S+l sin θ) sin θω20<BR> Nx=-(A+B-C) omega;0 cos θ·θ<BR> Ny=Bθ+ (C-A) ω20 sin θ ·cos θ<BR> Nz= (A-B-C) ω0 sin θ ·<BR>where<BR> A, B, C principal moments of inertia of latch with respect to axes<BR> x, y and z.<BR>m : mass of latch<BR>l : distance of center of gravity from rivet<BR> S : distance of a needle from axis of needle cylinder<BR> θ : angle between latch and stem of needle<BR> ω0 : angular velocity of needle cylinder<BR> θ, θ : angular velocity and angular acceleration of latch about the axis of rivet
