Description

This article examines the distinctive development of the German porcelain industry since the discovery of porcelain production in Meissen, highlighting the background of Germany's outstanding influence on Japanese porcelain industries. By the middle of the 19th century, four hotspots of porcelain industry had emerged on the territories of the German states. Each of those areas was characterized by favourable geographic conditions, technical development towards industrialized production, and the presence of entepreneurial spirit, to transform porcelain from a luxurious, upper class good to a mass-produced commodity for everyday use. Thus by the beginning of the 20th century German ceramic industries were able to capture the USA, the world's greatest import market for porcelain. At the first World Exhibitions, German porcelain products had a reputation of poor quality and bad taste. This changed by the end of the 19th century : Government promotion, in connection with a push for better design, had lead to significant improvements in the technical and aesthetical quality of German porcelain.
