Abstract

The Manzi and Tomoe (In Korean pronunciation is "Taeguk") crest is one of the most important geometric crests in Japan and Korea. The Manzi and Tomoe crest have balanced and dynamical shapes. The Manzi crests in Japan and Korea which have various types, are configurated under the relationship between 'positive' and 'negative' space. Fundamental form of Manzi is a linear cross form transformed from the Yotsu-Tomoe. Tomoe crest, by contrast, has been transformed from wave and spiral forms. The Tomoe and Taeguk crest has similarities among each other. The Tomoe crest is generated from pattern constructed by paisley shapes (commashaped beads). On the contrary, Taeguk consists of paisley forms in a counterclockwise direction. Although the Manzi and Tomoe crests in Japan and Korea have their own meanings and details, they have similarity in forms and structures which are symmetrical rotate shapes.
