Abstract

The history of Japanese municipal emblem design began with the local autonomy system in 1889. A new design genre was established in the history of Japanese graphic design at the same time. The purpose of this study is to analyze the transition of municipal emblem design in Japan during three periods. The first period was the dawn of the municipal emblem. In the second period, a form and concept of emblem were established. The third period was a uniform mass-produced period. Particularly, the characteristics of each period emerged from the design, which consist of Japanese letters: hiragana, katakana and kanji as motifs. There were some symbolic styles to make a sense of time in each period.
