Abstract

Based upon the aim of this research, which is to establish a guideline for general topological mapping of railway networks, an experiment structured by virtual railway network without circular lines in regions of Nagoya was carried out. According to the result, it is found that railways structured in straight lines and/or a combination of lines that forms some shapes could provide strong impacts to subjects. Additionally, the output of experiment also discovered that the best combination between the factors in topography, which are numbers of nodes and the dimension of curves, is with 6 notes and large curves. This is due to that the bigger dimension of the curves, the easier to be memorized and less time to repeat in memorizing process. On the other hand, subjects tend to adapt links into forms in accordance to their imaginations and recognitions. Therefore, two steps have happened during the redrawing process of topography: recalling the memorized form as the first object they draw, and then add additional lines that are meaningless and hard to be memorized on top of the form. Finally, a guideline for 'topographical mapping of railways withoutcircular lines' is proposed.
