Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of background visual information on velocity perception during smooth pursuit eye movement (SPEM). In the experiment, the speed of the end-points of the comparison stimuli moving from left to right with sine curve tracing on the screen of the PC, were compared to standard stimuli subjectively. As the background visual information for the comparison stimulus, we set 4 conditions of grid patterns with spatial frequencies of 0.25 and 1.0 cycle per degree (cpd) colored black/white (with visual information) or white/white (without visual information). As a result, the perceived velocity in the comparison stimulus with the frequency of 0.25cpd was slower based on the periodic characteristic of the background. Furthermore, from the analysis of two-way repeated-measures ANOVA, it was verified that the perceived velocity during SPEM increased with a grid pattern with a relatively low spatial frequency with background visual information.
