Description

The purpose of this study is to clarify backgrounds of the exhibition "Exhibition of 20th Century Design in Europe and America" and to argue the importance of this show in design history. Through comparison of this exhibition by Arthur Drexler with "Good Design" by Edgar Kaufman Jr. at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, it became clear that MoMA changed the policy of design exhibitions from commercial influence to aesthetic importance. And through this study, following two points became clear: Almost all of the related persons in Japan had considered the exhibition as a good design show. And the profile of the design exhibitions in Japan might have been determined as the non-commercial by this first and full-scale American design show based on the same criteria.
