Abstract

Hakata Gion Yamakasa was originally made with two lifting poles. However,it increased to six lifting poles at the end of the Edo Period,. These changes are difficult to see as very few historical resources are left in the Hakata Gion Yamakasa. However, the various types of Yamakasa are still observable in Northern Kyushu. The purpose of this study is to understand the features to classify each float of the Northern Kyushu Yamakasa, considering their relationship to see how Hakata Gion Yamakasa has been established.
This study is especially focused on organizing and classifying the binding methods for the poles. As a result, common parts have been found among different methods of Yamakasa. Then, mutual transformation and influence are inferred, and a viewpoint as for the establishment process is presented. Although the number of lifting poles increased with time, the current state has been made without any significant changes or increases of the Yamakasa's wooden part composition by repeatedly devising selected ideas.
