Description

The channel features of the Nakdong river are examined, analysing the longitudinal profiles of the river, the changes of the channel slope, the grain size distribution of the flood plain, and then the geological structure of the basin is discussed, based on the gradation.
The results of the study are as follows; although the whole channel of the Nakdong river had been regarded as the typical graded river, it does not show the smooth line but the succession of some graded segments when the longitudinal profile of the river was examined minutely. Every segment of the channel slope indicates the exponential curved line having different inclinations respectively. Therefore, the longitudinal profile of the river bed was consisted of several graded segments. They are longer in the segments of the lower reaches.
Each graded segment coincides with the boundary of the geological features; that is the border between the graded segments forms a narrow or canyons, and can be regarded as a local base level of a graded segment.
The grain size destributions of the river bed sediments appeared to indicate the changes in each segment; that is, in the narrow the mean particle size larger than that in the middle area of the segments.
The widths of the river channel and flood plain were narrow in the border area of each segment and wide in the middle area of it. Accordingly, development of the plain or the longitudinal profile of is also characterized by the sequence of the wide area to the narrow area coinciding with the each graded segment of the river channel.
