Description
Detailed comparisons are made between Geoemyda spengleri spengleri and G. s. japonica for the first time on the basis of large samples. There are considerable differences between these subspecies, which suggest that both forms should be more appropriately treated as independent species. On the other hand, results of comparisons with other closely related species indicate that G. spengleri and G. japonica compose a monophyletic group.
