Abstract

Six Early Carboniferous (Visean) gastropods are described from a sandstone bed of the Hikoroichi Formation exposed in the Onimaru Quarry of Ofunato City, the Kitakami Mountains, northeast Japan. This is the first report of Carboniferous gastropods from the Kitakami Mountains. Kawanamia is proposed as a new genus of the family Lophospiridae. The species described herein are Straparollus (Euomphalus) asanoi, n. sp., S. (E.) sp., Kawanamia onimarensis, n. sp., Baylea yvanii (Leveille), Littorinides sp., and Pseudozygopleura (Stephanozyga) nishimurai, n. sp. The occurrence of these gastropods suggests Visean age and supports the previous age assignment of the sandstone bed exposed in the Onimaru Quarry.
