Description

An elasmosaurian fossil is described from the Upper Yezo Group exposed along the Sanushube River, Hobetsu-cho, Hokkaido, northern Japan. Other fossils associated with the elasmosaurian specimen indicate an early Campanian age (Late Cretaceous). The specimen is represented by a partial skeleton of the trunk and parts of limb bones. The specimen exhibits a characteristic morphology of the family Elasmosauridae (Reptilia, Plesiosauria, Plesiosauroidea), but its generic and specific positions are indeterminable. The distribution pattern of the known Jurassic and Cretaceous plesiosaurians suggests that the Cretaceous Plesiosauria of northeastern Asia is a migrant from North America through the North Pacific region.
