Description
The oronasal fistula following cleft palate surgery occurs occasionally and becomes troublesome in different ways. The problems of these cases are mainly leakage of food and drink and speech disorders.
Our study reviews oronasal fistula occurring after palatoplasty. Subjects were 776 patients who had received palatoplasty by muco-periost push back in our clinic from Jan.1980 to Mar.1992.
The results are:
1. The overall incidence of fistula was 25.2 %.
2. In cleft type, the incidence of fistula was; 51.8 % in BCLP,42.6 % in UCLP,16.1 % in hard and soft cleft palate,9.4 % in soft cleft palate, and 4.3 % in Submucocal CP.
3. There was the lowest incidence of fistula in patients operated on during Jul.1989-Mar.1992 among the three groups; Jan.1980-Apr.1985, May.1985-Jun.1989, and Jul.1989-Mar.1992.
The conclusions are:
a. In Cleft type incidence of fistula had decreaed in complete cleft lip and palate
b. In Size incidence of large hole was decreasing from Jan.1980-Apr.1985, and incidence of slit hole and medium hole had decreaed rapidly from Apr.1985 to Mar.1992.
The recurrence ratio of fistula after the fisturectomy is relatively high in every method of fistulectomy. It is important for surgeons to prevent residual fistula in primary palatoplasty.
