Description

In the case of using sea sand as fine aggregates, it is well known that the reinforcing bars in concrete are corroded by chlorides involved in sea sand. We investigated the elution of the chlorides into fresh water. As the result, it has been proved that the chlorides originates from sea water which is involved in dredged sea sand, and is remained as adhesive chlorides on the surface of the sand after water in the sand is evaporated. The adhesive chlorides on the sand can be easily eluted into eluate by stirring the sand in fresh water We have developed a chloride removal system for sea sand, based on the results of our study. The system consists of a sea sand washer, a sedimentation tank for effluent treatment from the washer, and a sludge dewatering machine from the tank. The operating data show that chlorides in the sand is washed out less than 0.02 wt.% as NaCl/dry sand, and the turbidity of effluents is removed below 20mg/l, and the sludge is dewatered up to 40% of moisture content.
