Abstract
This paper presents a numerical model for predicting solute transport with multicomponent chemical reactions in groundwater. To test the reliability of the model, laboratory experiments were also performed under the conditions of pulse injection of high K+concentration into a homogeneous saturated soil column. In the numerical model, method of characteristics was applied for numerically solving the convection-dispersion equations involving the multicomponent chemical reaction term. A non-linear least square estimation by Levenberg-Marquardt method was adopted for obtaining numerical solution of the chemical reaction term. The calculated results of the cation concentrations are in good agreement with the measured data at the column outlet. In the numerical simulation under the conditions of continuous injection, the followings are demonstrated; 1) the simulated values of mobile ion and adsorbed cation concentrations satisfy the mass balance criteria, the law of mass action and the electroneutrality conditions, and 2) the simulated values of the nonreactive anion Cl-agree well with the analytical solution. It is concluded that the model can be successfully applied to solute transport analysis considering chemical reactions in groundwater.
