Description
Fourty-one lesions of early gastric cancer in 37 patients were treated endoscopically using Nd-YAG laser between May, 1982 and March, 1985.<BR>Twenty-eight of the 37 patients had severe surgical risks and twelve patients died of their underlying conditions. Gastrectomy was performed in four patients after laser therapy. Thirty-two of the 41 lesions were free from cancer cells in biopsied specimens and the resected stomach. Performance status of the 15 patients who still alive after more than 30 months with underlying conditions was not changed after Nd-YAG laser therapy. Endoscopic Nd-YAG laser therapy seems to be one of the possible therapeutic choices for elderly or critically ill patients suffering from early gastric cancer.
