  • Urine Volume in Cat as Influenced by Moisture and Fat Content of Food

抄録

Clinically normal adult cats (n = 6) were used to examine the effect of moisture and fat content of food on urine volume. The cats were given free access to three foods in a 3×3 Latin square de sign of 2 wk per period. The low-fat dry food (LFD) contained 4.0% fat and 9.8% moisture. The low-fat wet food (LFW) was prepared by adding deionized water to the LFD food to contain 70%moisture. The high-fat dry food (HFD) contained 15.0% fat and 9.9% moisture. When LFW and HFD were fed, urine volume increased compared with the LFD group. In the LFW group, the volume of drinking water was least but the water intake from food was greatest among the three groups, resulting in an increase in urine volume. In contrast, total volume of drinking water, moisture in the ingested food, and metabolic water originating from digestible nutrients was similar in both HFD and LFD groups. However, feces were less in the HFD group than in the LFD group, because DM digestibility was higher for the HFD food. Thus, the decrease in fecal water excretion may be a cause of an increased urine volume in the HFD group. Present results suggest that urine volume is affected by water and fat content of food, although mechanisms involved could differ between water and fat.
