In this study, biocomposites of plant oil-based network polymer with cellulose gel have been developed. Cellulose gel prepared from Ca(SCN)2 aqueous solution was impregnated with epoxidized soybean oil (ESO) by immersion, and subsequent an acid-catalyzed curing of ESO produced transparent composites. The mechanical properties regarding elastic modulus and strength were improved by the addition of cellulose. This behavior is related to the three-dimensional porous structure of cellulose gel formed uniformly distributed in oil-based polymer matrix. Furthermore, thermal stability of the composite was improved by the introduction of cellulose. The composite materials from renewable resources, plant oil and cellulose, are expected to contribute the development of bio-based materials in composite science.
