Description
In the northern part of Wakayama prefecture, Thrips palmi cannot overwinter in a field because of low temperature, but can maintain the populations on eggplant in vinyl-houses. By late July, T. palmi adults dispersed the eggplant fields within a distance of 800 m from the vinyl-houses in which the thrips overwintered, and within a distance of 1400 m from those by mid-August. After dispersal, thrips population densities in eggplant fields seemed to change, depending on control pressure of pesticides rather than on difference among locations. The thrips was more abundant in the margin than in the center of a field. The shelting fence around the eggplant field effectively prevented the thrips from immigrating into a field. To know thrips population levels, sampling method of counting the injured fruits was simpler than that of counting the insects on leaves. Therefore, growers had better moniter the percentage of injured fruits for control decision of the thrips.
