Description

(2, 2′-Dialkyl-1, 3-dioxolane-4-yl) methyl methacrylates were synthesized by the reaction of glycidyl methacrylate with alkyl ketones in the presence of phosphoric acid as a catalyst. The structures of these compounds were determined by elementary analysis, IR, NMR and MS analysis.
Radical polymerization of these monomers was carried out, and the mechanism of crosslinking of the polymer under the UV irradiation was investigated. Consequently, it has become apparent that these polymers containing pendant (2, 2′-dialkyl-1, 3-dioxolane) groups crosslinks readily when exposed to ultraviolet light. Further, in the samples which added benzoin or cobalt-naphthenate as a catalyst, crosslinking was remarkably accelerated. IR spectra of the crosslinked polymers irradiated in the air showed a decrease in the oxolane groups at 1,160 cm-1and appearance of hydroxyl band at 3,500 cm-1.
It can therefore be presumed that crosslinking under the UV irradiation occurs by the oxolane-ring-opening as well as auto-oxidation.
