Description

The degradation behavior of a protective coating system composed of long-oil alkyd resin paint and steel in an aqueous NaCl solution was evaluated by the use of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The apparent percentages of corroded area determined by XPS corresponded to the coating film resistance determined by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The XPS was a more sensitive analytical method in comparison with visual observation and was able to detect initial, and low level of corrosion not seen by visual observation. It is suggested that the degradation behavior of protective coating system could be evaluated by determining the apparent percentage of corroded area using XPS.
