Abstract

It was investigated whether a few pigments were encapsulated by soap-free emulsion polymerization of methyl methacrylate or not.
Pigments examined here were carmine 6 B (Index number 15850), disazo-yellow (Index number 21100), copper phthalocyanine blue (Index number 74160).
A few surfactans were added together with the pigments.
The surfactants added were poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) sodium dodecyl-benzenesulfonate, sodium dodecyl sulfate.
The size distributions of pigments before and after encapsulation and the effect of the pigments on the state of encapsulation were mainly investigated.
The state of encapsulation was estimated by SEM and EPMA. Disazo-yellow and copper phthalocyanine blue were encapsulated extremely well by using PVA as a surfactant.
Carmine 6 B could not be encapsulated even by using all the surfactants.
