Abstract

In order to clarify the atomization phenomena of paint by means of an air spray gun, diameters of paint particles and spray patterns in the various spray conditions were measured for a modified gun. The gun has two separate air channels for atomizing and patterning. The atomizing air issues from the center hole and auxiliary holes of the air cap ; while the patterning air issues from the horn holes, also in the air cap. The results are summarized as follows :
(1) Paint is atomized only by atomizing air, and not by patterning air. However, when both airs are jetted, increase of atomizing air flow rate makes spray pattern shrink and atomization is suppressed. Increase of patterning air flow rate makes spray pattern spread and atomization is promoted.
(2) Paint atomization by means of an air spray gun is essentially similar to that obtained by a conventional twin-fluid atomizer. However, the former atomization is considerably suppressed by the combination of paint particles.
