Description

Heat of solution (ΔHs) and Flory-Huggins χ parameter were determined for a wide variety of organic solvents as solutes in poly (n-butyl acrylate) (PnBA), poly (styrene) (PSt), poly (ethylene glycol) - 400 (PEG-400) and poly (ethylene glycol) - 20 M (PEG-20M) by gas-liquid partition chromatograhy (GLC). On the basis of the regular solution theory, polymer solubility parameter (SP value) was calculated from ΔHs and χ parameter without correction. SP values for these polymers estimated from ΔHs of aromatics, esters, and ketones as the solutes were19. 81 (J/cm3) 1/2for PnBA, 24. 04 (J/cm31/2) for PEG-400 and 23. 69 (J/cm3)1/2for PEG-20M. SP values were also estimated from the χ parameter : 21. 49 (J/cm3) 1/2for PnBA, 21. 28 (J/cm3) 1/2for PEG- 400 and 19. 38 (J/cm3) 1/2for PEG- 20M. SP values estimated by this procedure were in considarable agreement with the values obtained by the measurements of solubility and viscosity of polymers or the estimation from Fedors's method. SP values estimated in alcohols were larger than those estimated in the other solutes and literature values. SP value of PSt obtained from ΔHs was 21. 03 (J/cm3) 1/2, larger than literature values.
