Abstract

The fundamental characteristics of the emerging information revolution were anslyzed and explained as accelerating further the maturity of modern civilization,that is, as hyper-modernization. It was predicted that in the twenty-first century, capitalistic society and its nucleus of enterprises, markets, and citizens will be replaced at its core by intelligent businesses, intelligent environments, intelligent social practices, and intelligent citizens (“netizens") will emerge with the support of electronic networks. Finally, the Internet was identified as the most promising intelligent environment, its present qualities were described, and its future was posited. NOTE:This essay was submitted as a special Iecture for the 33rd Information Science and Technology Research Assembly.
