Abstract

This article is a chronological account of the flood disaster, response, and recovery aftermath at Hamilton Library of the University of Hawaii (UH) at Manoa. The heaviest rains since 1905 hit Manoa Valley in Honolulu on October 30, 2004. The rain gauge recorded 5 inches per hour at the storm’s peak. The normally sedate Manoa Stream became a raging torrent. Debris clogged the bridges and diverted the waters directly into the UH campus, with Hamilton Library suffering the heaviest damage. The Collection Services Division was completely destroyed. Nearly a century’s-worth of government documents, maps, and aerial photos were submerged under 12 feet of muddy water.
