Description

The present situation and future prospects of patent translation are discussed with particular emphasis on Japanese-to-English translation. The patent specification has two functions as a legal instrument and a technical documentation. Although aggressive pro-patent policy of Japanese companies lead to increases in foreign applications and demand for patent translation, a shortage of expert translators often leads to low-quality translation. Translation is highly intellectual work that inevitably requires correct interpretation of the original text, correct understanding of technology, a high level of English technical writing, high research capacities, and minimal legal knowledge. Several examples of translation and search are cited to propose specific measures to obtain strong patent rights. Solutions for improvements in translation quality are also proposed.<br>
