Description

We divided the serum of hookworm disease patients into various grades according to its solvency in alcohol, aether and water, and by injecting the extracted substance into a mormot, we examined which of the grades really contained the substance which promotes the increase of eosinophile cells.
The result of the experiment is as follows:
(1) The number of eosinophile cells increased from 3.5 to 4.8 times of the amount prior to the injection when 1.0cc. of the serum of hookworm disease patients showing eosinophilie, substance in the serum insoluble in alcohol, substance insoluble in aether and substance soluble in water were injected once in to a mormot.
(2) The increase of eosinophile cells reached from 3.8 to 5.0 times when the substance was injected consecutively for 7 days.
(3) The changes in the number of eosinophile cells was slight when the serum of normal man, substance in the serum soluble in alcohol, substance soluble in aether, and the floating fluid of red blood corpuscle of a patient and physiologic salt water were injected.
By injecting the serum of the hookworm disease patients and its extracted substances in to, a normal mormot, we proved that there exists a substance which promotes the increase of eosinophile cells in the serum. Thereby we think that this substance is something similar to protein since it is insoluble in alcohol and aether and soluble in water.
