A pilot at sea is a typical mariner who has accumulative experience together with technical knowledge. And, in the assigned pilotage waters, a pilot should always behave suitably even if difficult situations happen on board. This is the very important thing we expect of pilots and they are obliged to accomplish it. This signifies that the safety in navigation depends on mariners' experience. Although in real situations they carry these expectations on their shoulders, marine accidents may happen even if a pilot conducts a ship as well as a normal officer. This fact may show that some pilots have been unable to function at their full competence although they had already had enough experience. In order to improve safety in difficult navigational situations where pilots are needed, it is necessary to improve the competence when pilots conduct a ship and bring out the best in all of the crew members even in difficult situations. With this in mind, we are studying to clarify the factors that control how much extent experienced mariners are able to achieve their function in regard to crew members of a bridge team, and other matters that arise from this research.
