The Japan Coast Guard has studied on a PWM flicker light for the conspicuous Aids to Navigation light. The PWM flicker light is a LED light that is combined flickering effect using the method of Pulse Width Modulation (PWM), and it is known that the PWM flicker light with appropriate parameters is more conspicuous than the conventional Aids to Navigation light which is defined by the International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities. In this paper, we investigated several key characteristics of the PWM flicker light relating to observation distance, for applying it to the Aids to Navigation light. We also conducted questionnaire survey relating to the PWM flicker light in the Port of Yokohama. Our findings show that the PWM flickering light is practical within a certain range of observation distance.
