By means of wind tunnel experiments, Aerodynamic Characteristics of The Sail Training Ship NIPPON MARU were presented. These results were applied to practical ship maneuvering. The Jigger mast as a 4.1 high aspect ratio sail showed phenomenon to stall at 15 degrees of the attack angle, the maximum lift coefficient value reached 1.1 though the Fore mast as a 2.2 aspect ratio sail with 6 square sails didn't stall until 30 degrees but indicating the max. C_L value 1.0. Also, Jigger was larger than Fore at the drag coefficient value that had bad effects on windward performance. Thrust force of Jigger mast and Fore mast sails had similar tendencies at close-hauled or beam reach conditions. The difference of windward performance depended on sail trimming angle, as the yards bracing angle of square rigger like the NIPPON MARU was restricted by standing rigging over 30 degrees. On the actual ship, Sail scandalizing experiments carried out in following wind and wave conditions of the Winter North Pacific Ocean. Course keeping ability were improved by decreasing sails from after mast.
