Description

The clinical efficacy of low-dose clarithromycin combined with carbocistein was investigated in 42 children with chronic sinusitis.
1. Intranasal findings: the efficacy rates were 82% for the quality of nasal discharge, 72% for the quantity of nasal discharge and 100% for postnasal drip.
2. X-ray findings: the efficacy rate was 77% for the X-ray appearance of the maxillary sinus.
3. No obvious side effects were observed.
4. Although the dose of clarithromycin was very low (between one fifth and one third of the usual dose), high efficacy rates were still obtained. These findings thus indicate that the effect of low-dose clarithromycin is thus not due to an antibacterial mechanism but instead is due to some other mechanism.
5. The combined therapy of clarithromycin and carbocisteine was therefore concluded to be clinically effective and safe in the treatment of chronic sinusitis in children.
