Description

There are now many opportunities to treat extremely advanced aged patients due to the rapid aging of Japanese society. In this study we discussed 19 patients who were all 85 years of age or older who presented with squamous cell carcinoma in head or neck lesions. Six of the 19 patients had some limitations in their treatment regimens due to their advanced age or medical histories. Among 8 stage I patients, no treatment limitations were observed. However, among the 11 stage II or higher stage patients, six patients had some limitations in their treatment regimens. The median survival was 12 months for those with treatment limitations and 59 months for those without any such limi- tations. Therefore, we should administer the optimal treatment protocol whenever possible in such patients in order to achieve the best results after carefully consulting with both the patients and their families.
