Description
Sixteen cases of acute mastoiditis were treated at the Kurume University Hospital in Japan from 1988 through 1990. Eight cases occurred following acute otitis media, and 8 occurred following cholesteatomatous otitis media. The former cases were treated surgically as soon as possible, except for one adult who had shown a mild systemic disorder. In the latter cases, initial surgery was done to remove cholesteatoma and inflammatory granulation. In two of these cases, in which the stapes was intact and there was no significant sensorineural hearing loss, tympanoplasty was performed two weeks after the initial surgery.
