ALLOXAN DIABETES IN DIFFERENT STRAINS OF MICE

Description

This experiment was made to see whether susceptibility to alloxan differs among different strains of mice.<BR>Male mice of the CFW, CF1, C3H, C57BL, DDK, NC, KK, RR, SS, and AA strains of age approxi-mately 100-120 days were used. Alloxan was injected intravenously into the tail vein at a dose of 40, 60, 80 or 100mg/kg of body weight.<BR>The results demonstrated that susceptibility to alloxan is different among the strains of mice.<BR>The percentages of diabetics at the seventh day after injection of 40mg/kg in DDK and RR strains were 5.8% and 30.0%, respectively, while other strains did not show diabetes at this dose of alloxan.<BR>In animals injected with 60mg/kg, the percentages of diabetics at the seventh day after injection were 25.9% in CFW, 77.2% in CF1, 90.0% in C3H, 50.0% in C57BL, 56.6% in DDK, 0 % in NC, 30.0%in KK, 50.0% in RR, 53.8% in SS, 62.5% in AA respectively.<BR>At a dose of 80mg/kg, the incidences of diabetics at the seventh day after injection were of 100% in CF1, C3H, SS strains, 80-90% in C57BL, DDK, KK, RR and AA strains, 68% in CFW strain, and 9.0% in NC strain.<BR>At a dose of 100mg/kg, the percentage of diabetics in NC strain was 47.8%, while 80-100% in the other strains.<BR>The pattern of the percentage from the first day to the seventh day after injection showed different types between C3H and NC strains. C3H strain did not show diabetes at the first day but the percentage had been elevated since the second day in 60mg/kg, 80mg/kg and 100mg/kg groups. On the other hand, in NC strain the percentage of the second day was lower than that of the first day in 80mg/kg and 100mg/kg groups. The percentage of diabetics in other strains than C3H and NC strains increased slowly with time after injection.
