Abstract

An approximated semi-open queueing network (SQN) model was introduced to formulate the capacity design problem of a Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS) where jobs arrive according to a Poisson process. Any job arriving when the capacity of the FMS is fully utilized may be refused to accept and transferred to an alternative manufacturing system. An efficient algorithm was proposed for determining the optimal values in the number of stations, the total number of machining centers (being equally allocated among stations), the number of pallets available in the FMS and the warehouse-capacity, to maximize the overall profit of this system including the alternative system.
