Abstract

This study deals with the problem of designing the Production Seat System for a combination of make-to-stock and make-to-order production systems in a multi-stage manufacturing process. Like an airline or train booking system, customers' orders are assigned a production seat. Using the production seat system, inquiries about the delivery for individual orders can be answered quickly. The key issues in the production seat system are : (1) How should a production seat be set? (2) How should orders be assigned a production seat? Multiple manufacturing processes should be considered for setting the production seat system when a bottleneck occurs or the job flows differ from each other in the manufacturing process. Taking the manufacturing process environment into consideration, a production seat should be set and orders should be assigned a production seat in a multi-stage manufacturing process. This paper formulates a production planning model for a production seat system for a combination of make-to-stock and make-to-order production systems in a multi-stage manufacturing process, where a bottleneck occurs in one stage of various processes. Two kinds of design variables are set as policy in the model : one is a variable for setting the quantity of a production seat and the other a variable for assigning orders a production seat. The unfilled rate with respect to the market demand for MTS products and the ratio of delivery date achievement for MTO products are used as measures of manufacturing performance. Focusing on the manufacturing process environment, the following points are clarified through a series of numerical experiments : first, how the manufacturing performance will be affected by the design variables for setting the quantity of production seats and the way of assigning orders a production seat in the various manufacturing process environments; second, on the basis of the results of experiments, we present a method for setting production seats and assigning production seats to orders.
