Abstract

  Purpose：To investigate clinical characteristics and outcome of treatments for pediatric urolithiasis in our hospital. <br>  Materials and Methods：We reviewed the medical records of 12 children with urolithiasis treated in our hospital between 1997 and 2010. The investigated parameters included the age at diagnosis, sex, past history, radiologic findings, treatments performed, outcome of treatments, and the result of stone analysis. <br>  Results：Stones were located in the kidney in 7 out of the 12 children（58.3%）, and in the ureter in 5（41.3%）. Stones were on the right side in 7 cases, and on the left side in 5 . Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy（ESWL）monotherapy was performed in 8 children and percutaneous nephrolithotomy（PNL）in 3 . <br>  The stone-free rate of children with ESWL monotherapy was 88.9%, while it was 66.7% with PNL. With the additional ESWL, a stone-free was finally achieved in all cases. <br>  Conclusion：Our experience confirmed effectiveness of ESWL and PNL in pediatric urolithiasis. Further studies are warranted to determine the guideline of surgical management.
