Abstract

  To investigate the validity of adrenalectomy operative procedures for pheochromocytoma, we retrospectively analyzed the medical records of 28 patients who underwent laparoscopic adrenalectomy（LA）and compared our findings with those of another group of 8 patients who underwent open adrenalectomy（OA）between January 1992 and September 2010 at Hamamatsu University School of Medicine. While no significant differences were noted in patient characteristics, urinary catecholamine activity was significantly higher in the OA group than in the LA group. Blood loss was significantly greater in the OA group（p＜0.05）, with three cases requiring extended surgery including nephrectomy. Postoperative recovery time was significantly shorter in the LA group（p＜0.05）. In conclusion, while LA for pheochromocytoma is a useful first-choice surgical procedure, we must preoperatively identify those cases which require laparotomy in order to perform the surgery safely.
