<p>The objective of this study on the Japanese online securities industry is theoretically and empirically scrutinize the role of imitation in strategic groups forming and becoming dominant in this emerging market. By measuring the power relationship between the effects of legitimacy and competition that has been discussed thus far in the density dependence theory, two facets of imitation in the competition among companies in the early days—the positive and negative effects—are empirically demonstrated.</p>
