Abstract

Several recent studies have suggested that former employees may bring benefits to their former companies. However, the conditions under which former employees tend to benefit their former companies have not been fully investigated. This article explores antecedents of ex-employees’ supportive behavior toward former organizations from the micro-level perspective. Based on organizational identification research, in particular, this study examines a relationship between former employees’ inclination to support former companies and their identifications with former and present companies. Survey data obtained from departed employees indicate that their supportive behaviors toward former organizations is positively related to their identification with former organizations and negatively related to their identification with present organizations. Furthermore, their tenure with present organizations moderates the relationship between their supportive behaviors for former organizations and their identification with present organizations. These findings suggest that retaining identification of departed employees is important to companies in order to gain benefits from them. The results also imply that companies should consider building good relationships with their former employees.
