Description
In the operating room, where items of administrative importance such as narcotics, poisons, and rescue medications are frequently used, it is desirable to have pharmacists actively involved in pharmaceutical management. The National Hospital Organization Kobe Medical Center began assigning resident pharmacists to operating rooms in August 2013. We examined the effects of the activities performed by resident pharmacists in the operating room from August 2013 to July 2014. We considered the effects on medical safety, any reduction of the burden on medical staff, and the helpfulness of resident pharmacists in the operating room in relation to emergency medical care. According to the results, although the effect of resident pharmacists in the operating room on the budget, through their role in checking billing omissions and errors, was small, they were considered helpful in appropriate pharmaceutical management and medical safety. In addition, the results of a questionnaire survey of the operating room staff room showed that 77.8% of respondents considered that the time staff, other than resident pharmacists, spent dealing with medications was reduced by half, and the burden on medical staff was significantly reduced.
