Abstract

The purpose of the paper is to re-interpret Emile Durkheimʼs The Division of Labor in Society from the viewpoint of nationalism theory. The Division of Labor in Society is appreciated as theory of ʻcult of personalityʼ and ʻmiddle groupʼ. The cult of personality inhabits in the restitutive law, and such law guarantees the division of labor. However, how can the cult of personality realize? Because the punitive function of the law in the organic society weakens, collective consciousness doesnt boil. The cultsʼ need the concrete presentation to worship. This paper notices the concept ʻnationʼ as collective presentation. And the combination of nation and collective consciousness derived from middle groups generates ʻmoral individualismʼ.
