Description

We measured the chromatic aberrations of normal eyes of individuals between 22 and 57 years old using a Hartmann-Shack wavefront aberrometer (HSWA) with three wavelengths of light: 840 nm, 690 nm, and 561 nm. We investigated the differences in higher-order aberrations (HOAs) among the three wavelengths in 4-mm diameter pupils and the correlation with age. The differences in HOAs among the wavelengths did not change notably within the age range of the subjects measured. Simulation of chromatic HOAs at the examined wavelengths using a schematic eye revealed that the chromatic HOAs of normal eyes were very small. The accuracy of our instrument was 0.02 um (RMS value) for a pupil diameter of over 4 mm. So, chromatic HOAs of normal eyes do not change within the range of accuracy of the wavefront sensor. We calculated the correlations between higher-order Zernike modes of two different wavelengths to confirm a tendency of aberrations for each wavelength, and we found that the correlations were good within individual subjects. From the results, we confirmed that the chromatic HOAs of normal eyes were small among the three wavelengths tested.
