Description

Objective:We examined the treatment outcome following holmium laser enucleation of the prostate(HoLEP)in elderly patients.
Subjects and Methods:A total of 168 patients undergoing HoLEP between December 2005 and May 2010 were classified into two groups:those aged 75 or older(n=51), aged 74 or younger(n=117)examined subjective symptoms, and urodynamic indices, and complications.
Results:Significant improvements of subjective symptoms and urodynamic indices were noted in both groups(p<0.001). There were more complications observed in those aged 74 or younger, with 5 patients with urinary retention(4.3%), 5 patients with epididymitis(4.3%), and 4 patients with postoperative hemorrhage(3.4%). There was no significant difference observed in the postoperative reduction of hemoglobin, rate of blood transfusion, or rate of complication by urinary incontinence between the two groups.
Conclusion:HoLEP was considered a useful and comparatively less invasive procedure in elderly patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia.
