Description
To estimate the spin state of iron in Mg-perovskite in the lower mantle, the spin state of ferric iron in synthesized Mg-perovskite was measured at pressures up to 200 GPa at room temperature by X-ray emission spectroscopy at SPring-8. The result indicates that the spin number of ferric iron in Mg-perovskite began to decrease at pressure around 120 GPa with increasing pressure, but remained intermediate between high spin and low spin at 200 GPa. This result indicates that the spin state of ferric iron in Mg-perovskite does not become low spin in the lower mantle if the temperature gradient of the spin transition is positive.
