Abstract
Anisotropic garnet was found to occur in the Yamansu orthomagmatic and/or skarn type ore deposit, located along a fault in the back arc basin of the Carboniferous, east part of Xinjiang, China. Chemical analyses were carried out using an EPMA. The chemical composition of the garnet shows that belong to the grossular- andradite series. No chemical zoning observed in the single garnet. The d420, d444 and d400 values of the garnet were determined by XRD PSPC-MDG. The d420 and d444 plotted on a line joining each d value of grossular and andradite, respectively. However, the d400 shows large value as compared with an expected value from the line. It is considered that birefringence of the garnet is caused by strain of the crystal axis.
