Abstract
In this study, we investigated the structural effect on the binding interaction between La(OMe)2+ and acetophenones (L) . The free energy changes (lanthanum cation basicity, LaCB) for the reaction [La(OMe)2]L2+ = La(OMe)2+ + 2L were obtained in the gas phase by measuring ligand exchange equilibria using an FT-ICR mass spectrometer. Plot of relative LaCBs of acetophenone against the corresponding gas phase basicities (DGBs) showed that there is an excellent linear correlation with a slope of 1.02, for meta substituents and para electron-withdrawing groups. On the other hand, strong pi-donor substituents in the para position indicated negative deviations from the line. Negative deviations, therefore, suggest that the resonance effect of pi-donor substituent is reduced in the La(OMe)2+ complex compared to that in the protonated ion.
