Abstract
We synthesized the novel permethylated α-cyclodextrin-bisazobenzene dyad 1. The self-assembly of monomer 1 has been examined by solvent-, temperature- and concentration-dependent 1H NMR methods. The superstructure of the Janus [2]pseudorotaxane 2 is confirmed by both the determination of the value n = 2 of the degree of association and the symmetrical peaks in aromatic region. After azo coupling of 2 with 2,6-dimethylphenol in water, the novel Janus rotaxane 3 with a long trisazobenzene unit as a guest part was isolated and characterized. A possible piston movement of 3 in response to an appropriate external stimulus will be discussed.
