Abstract
The optimization of hull structure has not been well developed especially for a bulk carrier, since the FEM analysis is only applicable to evaluate accurately the strength of double bottom structure but is much time consumable for preparation of structural data. We proposed new estimation method of strength for double hull structure including double bottom in the separate paper. In order to obtain the optimum structural arrangement of bulk carrier in the very first stage of hull design and planning, a PC based hull optimization system has been established in consideration of this new evaluation method of strength. Scantling calculation has been carried out in accordance with NK bulk carrier rule and strength requirement defined in IACS (UR) in flooded condition has been incorporated in the calculation. The results of this estimation method have proved highly satisfactory and in good agreement with existing stock data.
